Rafael Micro Launches RT581 Dual-band Multi-protocol SoC for Advanced IoT Applications

2022-05-13

With RF IC design as its core competence, Rafael Micro launches the advanced dual-band 2.4GHz/Sub-GHz multi-protocol system-on-chip RT581 for the rapidly growing IoT communications market. RT581 integrates a powerful Arm® Cortex-M3 MCU with dual-band 2.4GHz/Sub-GHz RF and an embedded multi-protocol IEEE 802.15.1/IEEE 802.15.4 MAC, supporting Bluetooth® Low Energy 5.1/5.2/5.3, Zigbee® 3.0, Matter, Thread and Wi-SUN® applications.

RT581’s unique architecture allows 2.4G and Sub-GHz radios to run concurrently with different protocols. A typical application is connecting a Bluetooth phone while controlling and managing IoT devices on a Sub-GHz mesh network, such as home security. Sub-GHz-based products offer customers the following key advantages:

  • Extended range: as smart appliances move outdoors, Sub-GHz covers larger spaces and external devices.
  • Better wall penetration and obstacle bypassing — ideal for large buildings, security, smart grids and smart cities.
  • Reliability: Sub-GHz mesh keeps devices stable over longer distances and self-heals via multi-path routing when a node fails.
  • Scalability: expand coverage simply by adding more nodes.
  • Low power: lower frequencies deliver longer range with less power, and fewer retransmissions extend battery life.

RT581 supports Bluetooth® Low Energy 5.0/5.1/5.2/5.3, Zigbee 3.0 and dual-band 2.4GHz/Sub-GHz RF. Ken Li, President of Rafael Micro, said: “RT581’s unique architecture allows 2.4G and Sub-GHz radios to operate different protocols at the same time. It offers −114 dBm sensitivity (1% PER) at 50 kbps O-QPSK DSSS and a built-in 20 dBm PA. Outstanding adjacent-channel immunity delivers strong noise performance and speed even in crowded bands. Rich I/O and a high-performance ADC provide flexibility across applications.” With these strengths, RT581 in Sub-GHz mode is a reliable, low-power and cost-effective choice for Matter networks, with better range, indoor penetration and battery life.

RT581 combines flexible low-power RF with a 48 MHz Arm® Cortex®-M3 MCU, 1MB/2MB embedded flash and 144KB RAM for the latest Matter applications aimed at cross-platform IoT interoperability, with support from major ecosystem players such as Google, Apple and Amazon. Ultra-low power enables long battery life (Rx current @ 9.5 mA). RF protocol commands stored in ROM or RAM ensure low power and flexibility. Maximum Sub-GHz TX power is 20 dBm with −114 dBm RX sensitivity; with Zigbee®, TX EVM is under 2% @ 10 dBm. Packaged in 6×6 QFN with full software porting, customization and OS support.
